Living in Cebu

In early 2006 I will be moving to Cebu, Philippines with the entire family.

More than just surviving in the Philippines

Yesterday I wrote about all the bullshit we have to deal with in our over governed and regulated society and how escaping to the Philippines was a refreshing change. I do not want to give the impression that is our reason for moving to the Philippines.

We are going there for the experience of living overseas and to enjoy a better lifestyle. I have talked to lots of people who love the Philippines and look for some way to survive there. We are not interested in just surviving. We do better than that where we are. We are in fact very comfortable. So when we move to the Philippines there has to be some real life style improvements.

The warmer climate will certainly be one improvement. Over the past two decades I am have lots of experience in being in the Philippines and know what to expect at different times of the year including the rainy season and with it gets very hot.

Another advantage will be the availability of cheap domestic help. The wife especially looks forward to employing a couple of housemaids to take the drudgery of cleaning up after an untidy husband and 4 boys (two already in their teens). A happier wife and mother will in turn make the rest of the household happier.

We also look forward to renting a bigger house (not that we would call our current house small). I have seen an absolute mansion a friend of mine rents in Cebu. We have talked about the type of house we would like to live in and we agree living space is the most important.

We plan to do more entertaining so a dinning room to seat 12 or 14 is desirable. The wife also loves dancing (ballroom, Belly & Native) and there really is not enough room to do so in our current house so a large room or area. A nice out door meals area is also on the wish list.

We also plan to pursue a number of interests and hobbies that time and other demands at home currently do not permit. Many of these are available at a fraction of the cost in the Philippines. An example of this is Ballroom dancing which I recently enrolled into a classes with wife. $189 for a package of 3 private lessons and 3 group lessons. I expect that when we are in the Philippines we could for the equivalent of $189 have many times the number of private lessons in the comfort of our own home.
