"I've been to the Philippines twice and will venture to say that this book covers all bases. This book is a first hand guide from first hand experience. It is a must read for anyone planning on living or even just visiting the Philippines, from the 1st timer to the long term veteran. It doesn't get any better then this....Ben Bazy"

Decisions about accommodation

What ever your situation there will arrangements to be made regarding your current abode and personal possessions. If you are in renting then it may be as easy as giving notice. Those that own their own home will need to decide what do to do with it. The decision on if you should sell, lease it out or lock it up will again depend on your personal situation.

I would always advise against selling up all your assets and moving to the Philippines. If you sell your home then make sure that you leave some capital at home that would enable you to start again should you decide to return later.

I have already explained that I will be renting out the family home which is why I am working hard to complete renovations. Incidentally the latest cost of the driveway and extension slab is almost $9000 which is enough to build a substantial house in the Philippines. It really has dented the renovation budget. My first preference would be to simply lock up the house but my own financial circumstances do not permit it.

When we arrive in the Philippines we will be looking for a place to rent. I believe it is advisable to do this initially regardless of your personal situation. It will give you an opportunity to find out if you really like living in the area you have chosen. Regardless of how many times you may of visited a place and how long you have stayed you really will not know until you live there.

A long time ago we thought about buying the vacant block next to the family in the province. This would have been a mistake for a number of reasons. We now want to maintain a distance from the family to filter out much of the day to day bullshit.

Renting will give us flexibility to move if we don’t like the area and is an excellent way for us to find out if we really want to live in the Philippines with minimal commitment
