It is a must read for anyone planning on living or even just visiting the Philippines, from the 1st timer to the long term veteran. It doesn't get any better then this....Ben Bazy"

Soy Milk and House Maids

The wife had a day off today and we went to the Mall. We talked a lot about the move to the Philippines. A couple of the topics included House Maids and Soy Latte

House Maids

The subject of Maids came up and at this stage we are planning on having two. From what I understand it can take some time to get the right ones and usually they are imported from the Province.

I had assumed that we would visit the family in the province before settling into our new home but the wife said she would prefer to go later after we had settled. I then suggested to her that going back to her own province might be the best place to find maids. If the maid’s family is already known to her family in the province then it will better than getting a stranger.

The wife wants to get an older maid. I am not sure if this is a good idea but I have told her that the selection will be entirely up to her. Most maids do seem to be younger girls just out of school.

Soy Milk

We had lunch at TGI Fridays which I noticed on my last trip is becoming popular in the Philippines. The wife tried to order a Soy Latte. They informed her they do not have Soy milk which surprised us as they do seem to have a full range otherwise.

We went to another Café and ordered our Soy Latte. We both don’t like cows milk but for different reasons. I discovered years ago that reducing cows mild from my diet almost eliminated a sinus complaint that have bothered me for years before that. The wife has never liked cows milk complaining that it gives her a stomach upset.

One of the adjustments we will need to make in the Philippines is less choice and variety. While we know we will be able to find just about anything we want, many of the things generally available at home are not readily available in the Philippines.

A Soy Latte is a good example of this. Finding a good Coffee shop can be challenge and finding one that offers a Soy latte even more so. I am sure that this if I was in Makati it would not be too difficult but around Cebu I suspect it would be.

We can go without our Soy Latte and I only mention it as an example of the small adjustments that need to be made. I know that if we did find a good Coffee shop that did not provide Soy Latte we could easily make an arrangement with them to do so.
