Advantages of using a Notebook Computer in the Philippines

Having a computer is a requirement for my survival in the Philippines as I need it to manage my business interests. A year ago I updated my old notebook and have taken the new one over with me on my last two trips. It’s been great.

My wife actually purchased the new notebook as a gift for me using her own savings but still had me choose it as she does not know a lot about them. I settled on one for $2500 which had all the features I wanted and included the newer M type processor.

>>> Built-in UPS capability

One of the advantages of a notebook over a desktop in the Philippines is the built in UPS (Uninterruptible power supply) characteristic. Anyone that has spent time in the Philippines knows that the mains power supply is unreliable and not as well regulated as back home.

With a notebook you can just keep working during a “brown out” and do not lose any work or time. You can also attach a full size keyboard and screen so it feels like you are working on a desktop. The M processor on my notebook gives me a real 3 hours battery life.

>>> Mobility and Security & Privacy

I have a friend living in Manila that also needs a computer to mange his business interests including online trading. A few weeks ago his ISP went down for almost a week at a time when he really needed to closely monitor a particular stock. He was forced to go back and forth to an Internet café with all the information he needed.

It was a very frustrating time for him as he had to return a number of times to get details off his main system. There is also the security concern of having to enter financial account details onto a shared computer. Not to mention the general lack of privacy of sitting like sardines next to others on plastic chairs.

With a notebook computer he still would have to go to the Internet Café if his ISP went down but at least he would have everything with him and be able to conduct his business more securely and possibly find a more private seating arrangement.

>>> Getting cheapper

Today I returned the favor to my wife as her birthday is fast approaching and she has expressed frustration at sharing one of the children’s computers. I got out of it really cheap compared to her paying just $1186 with similar features to my own including the M type processor.

Notebooks are much cheaper now and have many advantages over conventional desktops in the Philippines.
