Food hygiene and nutrition in the Philippines

Went to a restaurant on Friday night. The wife thought it would be a good way for the family to celebrate her birthday. The consensus was Mexican. The food was good but the bill at the end detracted from the taste. It was $150 which I know is not really considered an expensive at all as far as a fine restaurant is concerned but this place was only maybe one step up from a take away. I only had one beer also which is normally where restaurant costs can blowout. Had I expected the bill to give me some change out of $100.

When you realize that many people living in the Philippines don’t have that much disposable income for the entire month it really makes you wonder how they survive. I have seen what many eat and it’s not very exciting. There are lots of watery soups served with rice.

Meat and fish is expensive so it is used very sparingly in quantities that only add flavor. A portion that would constitute a meal for us is shared by an entire family. Cheaper manufactured meats such as the “hotdog” are used as a substitute in many dishes such as spaghetti. Much of this food is of very poor nutritional value which starves developing bodies and minds.

Another major concern is the Filipinos attitude to hygiene. They like to think they are a clean people and are meticulous with personal washing and paranoid about body odors. When it comes to food handing they are appalling. They do not seem to have a concept of existence germs or bacteria. For them if it looks clean then that is good enough. No one seems concerned to see Flies all over food and refrigeration is erratic and inadequate.

Finding supplies of good quality foods will be a very high priority for us. We may obtain our Fruit and Vegetables from wet markets but our meat and fish will be sourced from those that understand correct food handling.
