Living in Cebi is not for everyone

Picked up a friend of mine from the Airport yesterday. He has just spent almost 3 months in Cebu. He has a wife and family there. He has also been thinking about moving to the Philippines to live and this trip was crunch time for a decision.

His circumstances are different from mine. He is older and only one year of retirement when he will be entitled to a pension. A few years ago he married his second Filipina wife (his first left him for a younger man). His new wife was already had two children from a previous marriage and has now had two by him. Without going into any more personal details it is sufficient to say that his choice is much better this time.

When he got married the second time his plan was to live in the Philippines so he purchased a block on land on Mactan and put up a simple native home. He then started purchasing trycles and hiring them out to drivers. Something that I would only recommend to the very experienced operator. This has worked for the past few years with the expected range of problems but has still returned a reasonable profit.

A year or so ago he discovered dumageti which he raves about and purchased another block of land there and was considering changing his retirement plans to there. At one stage he was talking about selling his home and investing 100% in the Philippines. I advised against this in the strongest terms possible. As I have said before even that English Train robber Ronald Biggs wanted to go home in the end.

In the past year he has been rethinking his plan to retire to the Philippines. There is no question that there are more opportunities for his kids future back home. Another consideration is health care. He has heart condition and some other minor complaints common in people his age. He is increasingly concerned about his health and what would happen to his family if he was not around.

Before he left he was already considering the option of bringing his entire family back home. Upon return he has decided that this is the best thing to do. He has sold all his trikes except one. He has left this with his best driver and told him that he will receive the trike free if he continues to drive it and pay 80P per day to his wife until the time she emigrates. He will sell both his properties at that time.

My friend has a lot to say about the Philippines and living there which I will write about over the next few days.
