Future water problems in Cebu / Mactan

Wow life has been so busy this past week. I am still flat out on house renovations. Its going to be a major challenge to complete them in time let alone find the money to fund them. As is always the case everything turns out more expensive than planned and new expenses pop up all the time. I have not eaten into my budget for the actual extension and will have to find the money for that.

So back to my friend that just got back from Cebu. He paints a very bleak picture for the future of Cebu/Mactan. Heavy deforestation on the surrounding mountains has already resulted in water shortages. He tells me that the water on Mactan is currently being pumped out at an unsustainable rate to sell to Cebu. Added this is the gradual pollution of the water table due to the Filipino design for septic tanks. They use a hollow block construction that allows seepage into the surrounding water table. They then have to drop a well further to avoid the “bad” water. Eventually the combination of the rapid depleting on the water table by multiple large pumps working 24/7 and seepage from septic tanks will result in Mactan being effectively out of water also.

These may become major problems in about a decade. If the problem was recognized back home things would be put in place to rectify the problem and eventually manage it. This being the Philippines they will keep doing it until suddenly it runs out and they will be surprised.

New technology / engineering may eventually come to the rescue but not before a lot of hardship that will fall heavily on the poor. It will also be an expensive exercise for the residents of Cebu / Mactan.

Does this change my plans to move to Cebu / Mactan? Not at all. It may affect any decision to invest long term in the area but living there for the next few years.
