In early 2006 I will be moving to Cebu, Philippines with the entire family.

"I've been to the Philippines twice and will venture to say that this book covers all bases. This book is a first hand guide from first hand experience. It is a must read for anyone planning on living or even just visiting the Philippines, from the 1st timer to the long term veteran. It doesn't get any better then this....Ben Bazy"

Balikbayan Boxes and moving to the Philippines

I am moving to Cebu next year. Have given a lot of thought to what I would take over there and have decided on a very minimal approach. I have been thinking about the Balibayan boxes.

One for each person (we are six) into which will go clothes and other personal effects. Everyone has a computer so my plan is to pull out the motherboard etc and simply buy a new case and monitor when we get there.

I know this is going to be fun when the time comes. I just want to buy everything new including all the kitchen utensils. The wife loves to cook and appreciates having good stuff. I understand this. Like a tradesman will have good tools so she wants good kitchen utensils.

Some time ago she said she wanted to take some kitchen stuff such as some German made frypan that she paid $350 for. For me a frypan is a frypan. Personally I think it is more cost effective to buy a cheap one for like $20 and be prepared to replace it every year.

Over the past month the wife has been searching for more frypans and I have been with her on a few occasions when she has been searching for a particular style. We finally found it and I now appreciate how difficult it was to find. I am also a lot less confident of finding an equivalent in the Philippines. So she now has three frypans she wants to take.

I understand that she wants to use good things. We talked about the fact that a housemaid would probably use it most of the time and not appreciate it (or appreciate it too much and it suddenly goes missing). As much as I would prefer us to just by some cheap ones over there I understand that cooking is one of her passions.

As we want to ultimately have two homes – one in the Philippines and our current home. So there is also logic for keeping the good stuff at home. Then again she may just suggest that we buy another set for home. Hmmmmmm that might not be such a good strategy…
