It is a must read for anyone planning on living or even just visiting the Philippines, from the 1st timer to the long term veteran. It doesn't get any better then this....Ben Bazy"

What to do with the dog and car

Time is just flying now with the move planned move only six months away. The home renovations are taking all my time and money. I can see myself having to make some compromises with regard to what gets finished and what does not.

Last week I got a post office box and will start changing addresses now. I will still be setting up a redirection after I leave but will try to get 99% of it happening now. I have already opted for electronic statements for everything possible.

I have two things to deal with that I have yet to work out a solution.

The first is the family pet. A five year old dog. Finding a home for him will be a challenge. He is a larger dog and lives outdoors. We would prefer to find someone to mind him but that is a big ask.

The second thing is the family car. My dilemma is should I keep it or sell it. I currently have it on a company lease at a cost of $500 per month. I have checked the market value and it looks like I will only be able to get enough to pay out the finance. This is often the way with these things. The alternative is to continue paying the lease and find someone to look after it for me. That way there is always a car for use here. The trouble is I am not entirely happy with the car.

Have not done any more house hunting or should I say research since my last post. Since posting my interests I have had about a dozen private emails with many offering actually houses. Most seems to be around the 40k. Some have been nice but not suitable for one reason or another. It does tell me that its probably a buyers market. As I mentioned already I was very impressed with what someone I know got for 20K last year so I am confident we will find exactly what we like.

I keep hearing that it will be more expensive to live on Mactan. Now that I have made a swimming pool a mandatory part of the house selection criteria opening up my options to greater Cebu is probably wise.

The original plan was for me to go ahead and find a place and then bring the family over. We have changed our mind on this. We have decided to go together. We will probably spend a week in Manila first as we have friends to visit. Then we will travel down to Cebu connecting up with some of the wife’s family.

Then find a nice beach resort and negotiate and longer stay. Will probably be on Bohol or Dumaguete which are much better value for money and in my opinion a nicer environment. With the children minded in a secure resort with relative the wife and myself can start the house hunting. We will do this without the pressure of all the family trying to live out of some hotel.
