Medical Attention in the Philippines

Its that crazy time of year. I have been flat out for the past two weeks and not actually done any real work. The house is starting to come together now. We did purchase the 10 seater outside furniture and have been enjoying it. Sitting up on the decking this afternoon (despite being a little cold) we were lamenting on how nice the house is getting and that we will soon be leaving it.

Medical Attention in the Philippines

I have a friend in Manila with a young baby that has a recurring high temperature. He has related his difficulty in getting good medical attention.

During the All Saints week (corresponds to Halloween) his daughter became very sick. He contacted every hospital in Manila only to be told that they had no doctors rosterred on and that he should call back the next day. When he called back he was told the same thing. These were the best hospitals in Manila. He was just about to jump on a plane to Singapore when finally he found a doctor.

When his daughter had bad broncitas his former pediatrician wanted to put the baby on the regemine for TB without waiting for tests to confirm it. The problem is that the meds can destroy a baby’s liver.

His experience with local clinics has been just as bad. One of his other children has a rash and the doctor said it's skin asthma. He said they say everything is asthma now yet don’t really know what it is.

He has finally found someone that seems to know what they are talking about and they have scheduled allergy test with an allergist specialist. Waiting on the results.

The bottom line is you cannot take medical attention for granted in the Philippines and assume you can find the same standard of attention. You need to find someone good and then have some backups.
