Storage Options

Have been extremely buys this past couple of weeks. Everything is starting to come together. Have had to compromise on what gets done properly and what gets patched up with regard to the home renovations. A month ago the amount of work to be done seemed overwhelming. Today it seems achievable with most of it scheduled to be completed before the going away party which is a month before we leave.

The other major concerns also seem to be resolved. A friend of mine is taking the family dog and another friend of mine will look after the car.

The storage of our furniture and things was becoming a major headache. Distributing our things among family and friends was one option we were considering (mainly the wife’s idea), but the more I looked at that the more I disliked the idea. It’s a big ask to get family and friends to look after you things. It is also unfair to place that responsibility on them and just the logistics alone was giving me a headache.

The most obvious option was then to pay for storage. When I explored this I found it to be expensive. It was explained to me that it is really designed for short term and its not uncommon for the cost of storage to exceed the value of goods over an extended period.

Another option was to store our things in the house in an area locked off from the tenants. I had dismissed this idea initially but a few days ago walked around the house surveying it for an ideal location. The double garage at the back seemed like a appropriate choice. This would still leave packing for the tenant under a carport with and electronic door at the front. I did not like the idea of using the garage. Despite being freshly painted inside I still felt our things would be too exposed to the elements. I was also concerned that locking off the garage would decrease the desirability of the property to potential tenants.

The next thought was the newly excavated home theatre room under the house. This was one of the compromises. I did not plan to finish this room before I left. There was also an access issue to the relocated laundry via this room. Way too hard.

I then thought of my office and decided it would be perfect. It is 9.5 x 20 feet which is more than adequate and really would not be missed by the tenants. This still left four bedrooms, Lounge/Dinning, Family/Kitchen, Sun room and another larger living area downstairs as well as heaps of storage in the unfinished area. The only thing I now need to do is put suitable locks on that study.

It’s a great relief knowing that we can simply move our things into a room in the house. No need to sort through everything and careful pack things away.

I have renewed the drivers license but have yet to lodge my 13a application. I have completed all the medical requirements (still need to go back and get the form filled in by the doctor) but still waiting on the police clearance.
