Arrival In Cebu

In early 2006 I moved to the Philippines with my family. This is our first time living overseas for any extended period of time. Before we left we did as much planning and preparation as we could. This is recorded in early blog entires. We a finally settled in, and after a period of silence for almost 3 months I have resumed the blog and its purpose of documenting our relocation and adjustment to living in Cebu.

So what have we been doing this past three months you ask. Well the first month was really a holiday and most of the time was spent around Luzon including Puerto Galera. After out holiday we came down to Cebu with no reservations or idea where we would stay.

I knew the Bellavista Hotel on Mactan from previous visits so we made our way there. Being a family of six we needed two rooms. With our luggage in the room we were totally cramped and new we could not spend another night there. I also remember not being very impressed with the Hotel for a number of reasons including poor cleaning of the rooms. The cost per nite was close to $100 for the two rooms and even then we did not have enough beds.

Later that evening the wife and I jumped into a taxi and went in search of more suitable temporary accommodation until we found a house to rent. We were shown a number of places and all were similar to the Ballavista with regard to space. Some were very expensive like the CGI family apartment, which was totally inadequate for our family and cost about 10 thousand or so a nite. Not even a very nice room for that money.

Finally we drove past a place called Angelo’s Apartments in Basac Mactan. An Italian and his wife run them. They are were actually more habitable than the Bellavista rooms and cleaner. We were shown a two-bedroom apartment with separate Kitchen (including table for four), lounge with sofa and Cable TV. There were three beds for the kids and on request another was brought in. We had our own separate room with a double bed. The place was secure with a 24 hour guard. Great value at less than 1000 per night which was half the price of Bellavista.

The accommodation is generally intended for longer stays but owners are very flexible and accommodating. For anyone interested here is the address and contact info:

Angelo’s Apartment Hotel
Basak-Ibabao Road, Lapu Lapu

Tel (032) 3408549

Here are my directions - heading over the old bridge from Cebu you continue up to Basak and turn left just before the BSM Hotel (Blue Sky Mansion). It’s a multi-store white building – you cannot miss it.
