Living in Cebu

In early 2006 I will be moving to Cebu, Philippines with the entire family.

Projects to finish before moving to the Philippines

I submitted the passport applications for the children and myself two days ago. The wife’s passport still has plenty of validity. The cost for 4 child and 1 adult passport was over $500. I don’t know how much the Filipino passports are going to cost yet but we will need 5 of them. Then there will be the cost of my permanent residence. The total cost for passports and my visa will be over $1000.

I have been very busy this past week on house renovations. I need to finish the house before we can move to the Philippines. Not to sell. We have no intention of selling as I have mentioned. We plan to rent it and there were a combination of things that we wanted to do and things that we needed to do.

For the past week I have been in the cellar with a Jack Hammer each nite digging it out for a new room. I started this project before we made the decision to move to the Philippines in 2006 and it also needs to be done before a new extension is put on to the back of the house. The excavation will be finished this weekend and the Bobcat comes on Tuesday to take away the dirt and level the area for the new extension. The holes have already been dug for the foundation.

Many wonder why I am putting so much effort into the house when we are leaving next year and only plan to rent it out. I have to agree that many of the improvements we are making are not at all necessary to do now but it’s a matter of personal goals I have set myself.

We have been renovating the house since we moved in five years ago and at the back of my mind is a now of never consideration. If we go to the Philippines leaving the house half done will we ever finish it? It’s just something we need to do. So for me part of the preparation of going to the Philippines is finishing the house renovations.

One downside to the renovation projects is that they are sucking up all my income which means I am currently not saving much in preparation for the move.
